Zellige: An Eco-Friendly Choice for Your Home
Zellige, also known as zliz or jelliz depending on the region
- is derived from the Arabic word زليج, meaning "small polished stone." It refers to a type of ornamental mosaic used in Islamic architecture. The individual pieces, called "tesserae," are handmade monochrome ceramic tiles. These glazed terracotta pieces are cut one by one and assembled on a mortar bed to create intricate, multicolored geometric patterns.
Is zellige expensive?
- Zellige tiles can be relatively expensive compared to other types of tiles due to the handcrafted nature of the production process. The cost can also vary based on the size, design, and quality of the tile.
